Blue Blossom Family
Renee
We are a family that loves to be outdoors. I have a tendency to neglect indoor activities, such as cooking and cleaning, because I prefer outdoor activities. I have worked in agriculture for almost 30 years and my favorite days are when I can be in the field. As I have climbed the ladder within my industry, however, the field days are fewer, replaced by longer days at my desk. My dream has been to have a small farm to grow our own fruits and vegetables and to sell that produce at a roadside stand.
Brandon
My husband recently retired from 22 years of service as a law enforcement officer. Not a career that’s traditionally considered “outdoor”, but definitely one where a great deal of his time was spent outdoors. His next career has him higher on the ladder and regularly behind a desk. One of Brandon’s goals now is to help make my dream of a small farm come true. Yes, I’m a blessed girl!
Sierra & Evan
Our children grew-up regularly going to the field with me. My daughter Sierra was 10 weeks old the first time she joined me in an almond orchard looking for damaged blossoms. My son Evan was 8 weeks old when he was in the front pack and his sister was in a backpack for a day in a citrus orchard. Having two kids strapped to you while walking on uneven ground is a great workout, by the way! Both kids love the outdoors and were involved with FFA in high school. They have bred and raised hogs, competed in vine pruning, tree pruning, speaking contests, and the list goes on.
Blue Blossom Family Farm
Agriculture has always been a huge part of our lives, but we only had backyard gardens and domesticated pets. That was until December 2021.
In October 2021, Brandon received a promotion at work. With permission from my employer, the search started for our dream property near Dallas, TX. We found 11.5 acres of pastureland with a creek, pond, animal stalls, and the perfect house. We arrived home on January 31, 2022!
Since arriving to our new home, our chicken flock has increased from 4 to 20 and will be increasing again soon! We have added a couple of ducks, as well. Our property is grazed by two donkeys, two Angus cows, one Longhorn cow, and three calves. We have already added a shop and tried to add a hoophouse/greenhouse. Unfortunately, we found out the hard way that we need to be better at strengthening our greenhouse against the wind!
We hope you come along for the journey as we begin to navigate the twists and turns of our evolving lifestyle as we learn to homestead and farm in Texas!
